What gives the djembe its pitch variety?

Different hand striking techniques and drum positions

Pitch variety on a djembe comes from how you strike and where you strike. The skin’s vibration changes with different stroke qualities (tone, bass, slap) and with striking in different areas of the head—center yields deeper, bassier tones, while striking near the edge produces higher pitches. The same drum and head tension can therefore produce a wide range of pitches purely through technique and hand position. Magnetic tuning, electronic pitch bending, or altering membrane thickness with a tool aren’t how this acoustic drum changes pitch in performance.
